Introduction:

If you're an ecommerce seller, then you know how important it is to have well-written product descriptions. But sometimes it's hard to find the time or inspiration to write them yourself. That's where Chat GPT comes in! Chat GPT is a tool that allows you to create AI-generated product descriptions. I decided to try it out, and here are the results...

What is Chat GPT?

Chat GPT is a powerful AI language generation tool that uses natural language processing to generate human-like product descriptions. It works by first analyzing your existing product description and then rewriting it using its advanced sentence-level AI technology. This means that you get unique and high quality descriptions in a fraction of the time, without having to spend hours writing them yourself.

The Test

When I saw Chat GPT mentioned online, I was absolutely intrigued and couldn't resist the urge to give it a try! After testing it out firsthand, I wanted to see how it stacks up against a traditional non-ai written description. Despite being somewhat skeptical at first, I'm actually pleasantly surprised with how useful this technology is – the results were really impressive, but there are still areas where a manually written description excels! It's definitely worth giving a try and seeing how it works for you.

Methodology

First I selected a few Amazon listings from different categories as well as different rankings to see how the AI generated descriptions compared to the original ones. I then used Chat GPT to rewrite each product description and tested it against the original one for accuracy, readability, and overall quality. For fun I showed the descriptions to my co-workers to see which description they liked best.

The Initial Results

Overall Chat GPT performed well I was surprised to see how well the sentences flowed and how content-rich the descriptions were. In terms of accuracy and readability, the AI generated descriptions scored better than the original ones in almost all cases. What was amazing was the creativity of the AI as it would often create new descriptions with completely different words and syntax while still conveying the same meaning. However this could prove dangerous as in one of the descriptions the generated content was not factually accurate and could have impacted the expectations from the customers.

After all that praise my biggest complaint is that Chat GPT would often not consider the formatting or layout of the page, resulting in descriptions that don't always fit the given space. However this was easily fixed by manually adjusting the text to fit within the allocated space. Bullet points would often be changed from deliberate bit-sized snippets of information to droning paragraphs.

A-B Testing

All in all rewrote 7 descriptions using Chat GPT. When these descriptions were put side by side 4/7 times the AI generated descriptions were favored by the co-workers. I believe this is mostly due to the flow and grammar of the sentences rather than the content as no one I showed these to picked out the inaccuracy I mentioned above despite it being clear the item did not come in many colors. This means that if you're looking for a quick and easy way to create product descriptions then Chat GPT maybe feasible for your business as it performed slightly above average in this test winning 4/7 head to heads.

Final Takeaways

At the end of this little exercise the question I was asking myself was would I recommend using Chat GPT to write product descriptions and the answer is as always it depends. If you're short on time and you need to generate human-like descriptions quickly then it's definitely worth giving it a try. However manually written product descriptions will still outperform the AI in terms of accuracy, readability, creativity, and formatting. So if your main priority is to create an engaging description that stands out from the crowd then you may be better off investing the time to write it yourself. If you struggle with ideas or have difficulty with writing in general then Chat GPT can definitely make the task easier! I personally like to use Chat GPT similarly to a thesaurus. I use it to rewrite specific sentences or paragraphs to make them more interesting or to add clarity. Asking Chat GPT to rewrite something at a 4th grade level can be a great tool to keep in mind when explaining complex topics or features. All in all, it's a great tool to have available and you should at least give it a try before forming a final opinion.
